About the Comal County Parkinson Support Group:

Parkinson's disease(also known as Parkinson disease, Parkinson's, idiopathic parkinsonism, primary parkinsonism, PD, or paralysis agitans) is a degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease result from the death of dopamine-generating cells in the substantia nigra, a region of the midbrain; the cause of this cell death is unknown. Early in the course of the disease, the most obvious symptoms are movement-related; these include shaking, rigidity, slowness of movement and difficulty with walking and gait. Later, cognitive and behavioural problems may arise, with dementia commonly occurring in the advanced stages of the disease. Other symptoms include sensory, sleep and emotional problems. PD is more common in the elderly, with most cases occurring after the age of 50.

Parkinson Disease(PD) is the number two neurological Disease in the world right behind Alzheimer's Disease.  There is no known cure for PD.  It is a disease that slowly robs movement control, bodily function control, and the mind.  Approximately 80% of all PD patients will end up with dementia.  PD is a true boutique disease.  It does not effect any two patients in the same way.  Therefore there is know one treatment that works for all PD Patients.

There is an estimated 1.5 million people diagnosed with Parkinson Disease(PD) in the U.S.   In Comal County alone there are over 250 people with a known diagnosis of PD.  In our five county area Comal, Hayes, Kendall, Guadalupe and Bexar there are literally thousands of PD cases.
Please help Comal County Parkinson Support GroupCCPSG) and American Parkinson Disease Association(apda) raise funds for research and education for the five counties we serve.  All funds will either go to research or education for PD Patients and their families.
